Abstract [en]

The previous chapters concentrated on many recent factors that affect the structural design of roads and streets. These factors can be seen as opportunities to enhance and develop road design standards and regulations.

This chapter focuses on the use of accelerated pavement testing (APT) to test road structures designed to meet the requirements of future urbanization, digitalization, electrification and climate change, as well as reconfigurable streets. These tests are necessary to ensure that the future pavement structures perform well with anticipated increase in using AVs, underground infraculverts, and electrifying of pavements for dynamic electric vehicles charging, as well as maintain resilience against climate changes such as excess water, flooding problems and snowfall.

The different combinations of factors influencing the structural design of roads are perceived as important in different situations. There is no one solution that will fit all situations; therefore, this chapter calls attention to possible combinations of many smart solutions during testing as well as during real application within road networks.
