Abstract [en]
Porous asphalt is used for reducing road traffic noise but is often associated with reduced durability, especially in cold regions. This study investigates the combined effects of binder type, aggregate mineralogy, mixture design, and environmental conditioning on the acoustic and durability performance of porous asphalt mixtures intended for Swedish roads.
Eight porous asphalt mixtures were produced in the laboratory using three recipes, three different polymer-modified binders, and two mineralogically different aggregate types. The acoustic performance of the produced mixtures was then evaluated using impedance tube measurements before and after freeze-thaw conditioning, while their durability was evaluated through Prall abrasion, Cantabro particle loss, and indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR) testing.
The results indicated that freeze-thaw cycling did not result in a significant change in the acoustic performance of the tested mixtures. However, the durability and acoustic performance of the tested mixtures were highly affected by their mix design and material selection. The ranking, made among the tested mixtures in this study, helped recognize the extent of impact coming from binder-aggregate compatibility as well as the mix-design changes in both durability and acoustic capability of the porous asphalt mixtures.
The results of this study demonstrated that no single mixture provided the best acoustic and durability performance. This confirms the complexity of the porous asphalt mixtures and a trade-off between the noise-reducing and mechanical performances. The laboratory results provide knowledge as a basis for further development of porous asphalt under cold-climate conditions.
