Entering adulthood : An interview study on the importance of transport for young people with mobility impairments
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Being able to participate in society – through, for example, work, education and leisure activities – is crucial for individual well-being. Transport plays a central role in this. For young people with impairments who are transitioning into adulthood, new transport needs – and thus new challenges –arise, for example when they wish to move into their own accommodation, begin their studies, or seek employment.
In this study, five young people with mobility impairments were interviewed: three individuals preparing for adult life and two who have recently entered adulthood. The interviews shed light both on the future plans the participants have or had in relation to transport and accessibility, and on their current experiences of the transport and accessibility situation. Also, the informants’ views on the need for improvements in transport opportunities for young people with mobility impairments are described.
The informants express a strong desire to live an independent life. This applies generally, and transport is an integral part of that – they want to be able to travel independently. Those still in upper secondary school have plans to continue studying at university and eventually move into their own home. The availability and practical functioning of transport options can significantly influence the extent to which they can live the life they aspire to, both now and in the future. This reflects an interplay between various factors. Environmental factors – such as societal attitudes and prejudices, and how vehicles and traffic environments are planned and designed – interact with individual resources and factors, such as financial circumstances, personal wishes and needs, and the severity of the impairment in relation to environmental conditions.
The informants report shortcomings in the transport system, partly due to traffic environments and vehicles not being adapted for people with impairments, and partly because accessibility equipmentdoes not function as intended. Several informants state that, for these reasons, they avoid travelling. The results also show that accessibility and transport play an important role when seeking employment, and that shortcomings in the transport system can lead students to discontinue their studies. Regarding the need for improvement, the informants highlight, among other things, that planners and decision-makers should listen to and learn from the target group's own experiences and needs.
