Abstract [en]

A dynamic traffic assignment problem is considered where travelers are modeled as integral decision makers and network flow is composed of integral vehicles. As travel behavior affects network conditions and network conditions affect travel behavior, a complex model system results. The versatility of the considered model class has led to increasing practical interest (“agent-based simulation”) but also complicates the development of solvers for mutually consistent travel behavior and network conditions that represent possible long-term states of a transport system. Continuum flow assignment techniques are not applicable to this model class. This work starts out from a Nikaido-Isoda gap function for the traveler- and vehicle-discrete dynamic traffic assignment problem. A tractable but rather uninformative upper bound on this gap function is derived. A reformulation is presented that violates this bound as little as possible while ensuring that the reformulated bound carries relevant information for the subsequently developed new assignment heuristic. The proposed approach is formally related to and experimentally compared with relevant methods from the literature. It is found to exhibit superior performance in nontrivial case studies for Stockholm (Sweden), Oslo (Norway), and Berlin (Germany).

Abstract [en]

Individual-level travel surveys provide valuable but incomplete information about travel demand. They typically cover only a subset of the population and lack temporal and spatial detail. A synthetic population provides a complete representation of residents in a region with socio-demographic characteristics but often without mobility behavior. This work aims to extend the information in a travel survey to the full synthetic population, thereby generating consistent, individual-level mobility patterns at scale. These disaggregated travel schedules are useful for many applications, including the creation of physically consistent dynamic origin–destination (OD) matrices. This problem has direct policy relevance. Transport planning in Sweden relies on demand forecasts from the national model Sampers, which produces static OD matrices. Such matrices ignore within[1]day variations in travel and therefore cannot adequately capture time-dependent congestion phenomena, such as the build-up and dissipation of queues during peak periods. The existing dynamic network model Dynameq can represent these processes, but only if provided with time[1]dependent demand. By disaggregating survey data to a synthetic population, we provide a pathway to generate the necessary dynamic demand representations.

Abstract [sv]

Räddningstjänsten är en central del av samhällets motståndskraft och är nära sammankopplad med transportsystemet. Tjänsterna måste vara tillgängliga överallt och när som helst, vilket ställer höga krav på enheternas rörlighet och fordonsflottans kapacitet. Övergången från förbränningsmotorer till fossilfria lösningar påverkar denna kapacitet. Vi presenterar ett angreppssätt för att ge räddningstjänster kvantitativt, evidensbaserat beslutsstöd för en fossilfri framtida fordonsflotta.

Projektet utvecklar ett nytt multimodalt nätverksmodellssystem för godstransporter under svenska förhållanden. Den centrala egenskapen hos den nya modellen är representationen av fordonsrörelser (tåg, lastbil, fartyg) längs slutna slingor i nätverket, där gods lastas och lossas vid mellanliggande stopp under dessa rundresor. Denna representation fångar naturligt även tomtransporter som rundreseepisoder utan last. Jämfört med den befintliga modelleringen baserad på ursprungs-/destinationsresor möjliggör detta en mer detaljerad modellering av godskonsolidering och fordonsval på nätverksnivå (inklusive tågsammansättning). Projektet finansieras av Trafikverket.

I centrum för den föreslagna modellen står fordonsrörelser längs rundresor med flera möjliga stopp, snarare än OD-relationer. Den främsta strukturella fördelen med detta är fordonskonservering – fordon försvinner eller uppstår inte längs en slinga – vilket en resbaserad representation inte kan garantera utan ytterligare åtgärder. Att använda cirkulära rörelsemönster som byggstenar för nätverksflöden medför dock viktiga utmaningar.

Abstract [en]

Dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) models are used in many transportation planning and traffic management scenario analyses today. The aim of the DTA model is to reproduce the pattern of vehicular movements. DTA models require inputs in terms of demand and capacity of the road network and are very challenging to calibrate for large urban networks. In this paper, a new network-wide calibration method for link capacities in urban networks is proposed. The method takes link flow observations for a subset of the links in the network to estimate the link capacities. The proposed method relies on partial least squares (PLS) regression and is demonstrated to be feasible and efficient in an urban road network (Stockholm, Sweden) compared to the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) method. Performance analysis of the proposed method for different amounts of link flow observations shows that it performs favorably for the cases in which only a small percentage of link flow observations is given.

Vi presenterar en öppen källkodsversion av en skiss av Samgods logistikmodell. Den ursprungliga Samgodsmodellen är en stor och komplex programvara, vilket gör dess användning eller vidareutveckling till en icketrivial aktivitet. Den nya skissversionen är implementerad i Java. Den använder förenklade datastrukturer och endast en grundläggande uppsättning av Samgods parametrar för att underlätta experimentella studier och modellens vidareutveckling.

Den nuvarande modellen tar efterfrågan på godstransporter och valmöjligheter för transportkedjor som indata (baserat på Samgods filformat) och förutsäger val av kedja och sändningsstorlek, realiserat transportarbete och konsolidering samt resulterande transportprestandamått (som till exempel CO2-utsläpp). Modellen är kostnadskänslig eftersom valen beror på transportkostnader som uppskattas av en transport- /konsolideringsmodell. Ömsesidig konsistens mellan val och transportkostnader uppnås iterativt. Det beskrivna modellsystemet kräver inte (mikro-)simulering och är i detta avseende fullt kompatibelt med Samgods befintliga kontinuumflödesmodelleringsansats. Modellen är dock konstruerad på ett sådant sätt att en konsekvent nedströms simulering av enskilda fordon, deras laster och utsläpp är möjlig.

Dess första testfall fokuserar på CO2-utsläpp från godstransporter. Det visas att modellsystemet representerar rimliga effektsamband och förutsäger, med den för närvarande begränsade kalibreringen, rimliga transportprestandamått och CO2 utsläpp.

Ambitionen med detta arbete är att underlätta experimentell vidareutveckling av ett svenskt nationellt godstransportmodellsystem och genom detta bidra till den fortsatta utvecklingen av Samgods. Den relativt strömlinjeformade skissmodellen underlättar experimentella studier.

I dagsläget vet vi inte så mycket om hur olika åtgärder inom sjöfarten, såsom farledsförbättringar eller regelförändringar,påverkar sjösäkerheten. I detta projekt tas en metod fram för att skatta olycksrisken på sjön med syftet att förbättra effektsambanden för sjösäkerhet.  

Modellen skattar med hjälp av AIS-data och expertbedömningar risken för kollisioner mellan fartyg och tar i dagsläget hänsyn till trafikintensitet, säkerhetsavstånd samt hur fartygen möts.

In near coastal environments, nautical charts provide crucial information for navigation and routing both in real-time operations and during planning stages. The cost of data collection as well as capacity constraints in the processing pipeline make reliable bathymetric information in such areas sparse. Prioritization rules can help guide the efforts to where information is the most valuable. AIS data provide accounts of real ship movements, indicating both desirable paths and minimum depths. We propose a statistical model for combining sparse bathymetric soundings with AIS observations for improved prediction of depths for generation of feasible transportation corridors. The method relies on viewing AIS draughts as censored observations of the true depth. A case-study is performed for the southern archipelago of Gothenburg using the program R-INLA. The non-stationarity caused by having boundaries with known (zero) depth and holes (land) in the domain is handled through discretization. Varying amounts of AIS data, ranging from none to 1824 observations, are used in the experiments. Results show predicted depths within the range of data values, and that inclusion of AIS data serve to push the field down to ensure that traverseable areas are predicted as such revealing corridors in narrow passages where bathymetric soundings are lacking.

Abstract [en]

There is a lack of standardized methods for socio-economic evaluations within the maritime transport sector. This paper presents a model for analysing and quantifying the intensity and severity of ship conflicts using AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and expert assessments. Also, a case study applying the proposed method to the Southern Gothenburg Archipelago is carried out. The goal is to contribute to cost-benefit analyses within the maritime transport sector by a better understanding of how different actions, such as the widening of fairways or new regulation, impact maritime safety. The importance of validating the model by comparing its results with independent sources of reported maritime accidents is emphasized, and the challenges of using existing accident statistics for this purpose is discussed. The basic model described in the paper can be built upon by differentiating parameters by region and vessel type, account for seasonality etc. Furthermore, a downstream consequence analysis model is needed to enable a monetary valuation of (the consequences of) identified conflicts. Finally, the same principles as laid out here for conflict analysis can also be adopted to the identification of groundings.
