    Abstract [en]

    Samples from high-quality wearing course asphalt mixes were collected during production in the seasons 2009-2013. The samples included modified asphalts as well as reference mixes. Three different surface wear tests, with respect to abrasion from studded tyres, were carried out using VTIs circular road simulator (PVM). In order to verify the correlation between the three different test modes, tests according to EN 12697-16, Prall method, have been carried out.

    Each of the tests included 14 mix types, including a reference mix, distributed over 28 test plates. The test plates were constructed in a laboratory environment. Extra plates were also constructed for laboratory testing. In total, 42 plates were required per test. Standard plates for PVM testing were used and had a thickness of about 40 millimetres.

    Each test used tyres that had been “run-in” for about 500 kilometres. Sixteen tyres (including 4 reserve) were required for the test runs. Tyres were purchased at the same time from the same manufacturer and divided up randomly.

    Testing was carried out until a constant linear rate of surface wear was achieved. The minimum and maximum number of machine revolutions were set at 200 000 and 300 000 respectively. Surface wear measurements were made by a laser profilometer and were taken at regular intervals on all 28 sample plates.

Ca 50 laboratorier har deltagit i ringanalyserna för skrymdensitetsmetoderna och 20 lab för vattenkänslighet, 8 för Prallslitage och 14 för dynamisk kryptest

    Proverna, bestående av en ABb16 70/100 massa med 6,3 procent bindemedelshalt,

    kornkurva av de cirka 60 laboratorier som deltog i ringanalysen.

    Resultaten redovisas i form av repeter- och reproducerbarhet för de olika

    analysmetoderna. I rapporten redovisas även andra statistiska mått.

    Abstract [sv]

    DIRECT-MAT (Dismantling and Recycling Techniques for Road Materials - Sharing knowledge and practices) is a European project in the Seventh Framework Programme. The project consists of 20 partners in 15 countries. The purpose of this project is, in a European perspective, share knowledge and experiences about recycling of road materials into new roads. The results will be presented in a web-based database where manuals, guides, national documents, references and literature studies are easily accessible. Case studies that exemplify the practical use of methods from the participating countries will also be available.

    The project is divided into four groups that concentrate on recycling of different types of road materials. They are: - unbound road materials, - hydraulically-bound road materials, - asphalt-based materials, - other materials (e.g. ash, slag, rubber tires, contaminated sediment and vegetation from ditches).

    This VTI report summarizes the Swedish experience of demolition, and recycling of road materials for use in new roads.

    Abstract [en]

    Laboratory tests, to treat a sand, contaminated with an active organic substance, with different hydraulic and puzzolanic binders, are described. Portland cement gave poor results, also with activating substances. Better results were obtained with a slag binder, activated with waste gypsum, calcium chloride, or a cement-fly ash binder.

    A blended cement, containing fly ash, was used to strengthen road 1175 with a plant-mixed base-course. Because of the poor immediate stability, tests were made to mix in additional fly ash (a wet, conditional material). Good results were obtained and it was possible to decrease the cement content.

    Abstract [en]

    The report summarizes the experiences of low noise asphalt pavements in Sweden. It is primarily focused on the asphalt-related factors that affect noise. It also considers the importance of road design when porous asphalt is used, an inventory of where the low noise pavements have been used in recent years, inspection of sections laid in the Stockholm region, annual cost, different types of low noise pavements and more. The most common term for low noise asphalt is porous asphalt, PA. Porous asphalt has high void content and high proportion of coarse aggregate (85%). This gives it a continuous pore system, which can lead water away and absorb some of the sound from the tires. The aim from the beginning was to improve road safety and traffic flow on the road during rain. Over time, the focus has shifted to low noise ability and are used today primarily to limit noise disturbance. In order to improve the resistance of porous asphalt, laid in two layers, an R&D project was started in 2010, with participation of suppliers, contractors, Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and the Swedish Transport Administration. Three major test sections on high traffic roads with a speed of 90, 100 and 110 km/h have been built. They were laid 2010, 2012 and 2014 in the southern, central and northern parts of Sweden. Noise reduction has been 7–8 dB(A) for the new pavements and then reduced by 0.5–1 dB(A) per year. The durability of this porous asphalt has been good with stone loss or other damage occurring only to a small extent.

    Abstract [en]

    The report describes a test road with Porous Asphalt (PA) on E4, Huskvarna. Construction contract form of the object was a turnkey contract, including requirements on noise reduction during operation time. In the summer of 2010 two layers of porous asphalt (double layer) were laid at a distance of 2.7 km by Huskvarna. In connection with the performance of the pavement were also a number of test sections into the object. A working group with representatives from contractors (Svevia), suppliers (Nynas), researcher (VTI) and Transport Administration had started up in early 2010 with the aim to develop a concept for double layer of porous asphalt with as good technical and acoustic properties as possible. Past experience showed relatively short lifetimes of these types of pavement and damage related to durability occurred in early stages. VTI has performed noise measurements according to the CPX method (ISO/DIS 11819-2) years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The measurements have been performed in all lanes and directions and gave the following results: · 2010: Noise reduction is 7 to 8 dB(A). · 2011: Noise Reduction 7 to 8 dB(A). · 2012: Noise Reduction 6.5 to 7.5 dB(A). · 2013: Noise Reduction 6 to 7 dB(A). · 2014: Noise Reduction 3 to 6 dB(A). The change of 3 dB(A) from 2014 compared with 2013 is connected to the lane K1 where the road was sealed in autumn 2013. The pores may have partially obstructed by the applied adhesive but also by road dirt. The drainability conducted in 2014 also show poorer drainage capacity compared with previous measurements. Drill cores from the road will also be examined for road dirt in the pores.

    Abstract [en]

    A round robin was carried out by seven different laboratories in Sweden for four different types of bituminous binders, two harder bitumen and two soft bitumen. The purpose of the round robin test was to compare the viscosity methods using capillaries against the new variant with a rotating spindle viscometer. Apart from these methods the aging characteristics was also tested but later not evaluated. Much data were collected from different variations on these analyzes and the focus has been on evaluating data from EN 13302, EN 12595 and EN 12596, which was the main purpose of the round robin. The evaluation has focused on the reproducibility for the various methods compared with the precision in the different standards. The variation in the result for the method SS-EN 13302 was generally lower in this round robin test compared to the precision in the standard while the variation for the SS-EN 12595 and SS-EN 12596 generally was higher.

    Databas över provvägar: ett samarbetsprojekt mellan Skanska, VTI, Nynäs, Trafikverket och SBUF2010Report (Other academic)

    En databas över provvägar har tagits fram. Databasen består av uppgifter om typ av konstruktion, beläggningslager, vilka provningar och mätningar som utförts mm. Uppgifterna är hämtade från forskningsrapporter och utredningar som finns dokumenterade hos VTI, Trafikverket, entreprenörer, leverantörer med flera.

    I databasen finns möjlighet att göra sökningar för att få en bättre överblick över innehållet i databasen. Sökningar kan göras på olika beläggningslager, beläggningstyper, typ av material och regioner (dvs. var i landet provvägarna är placerade).

    Databasen består för närvarande av ca 100 poster, dvs. beskriver ett 100-tal olika provvägar. Flertalet är från VTI:s olika forskningsprojekt men önskemål finns att utöka databasen med uppgifter från entreprenörer, kommuner med flera.

    För att databasen skall vara intressant framöver är det mycket viktigt att det tillförs resurser årligen för att utveckla och uppdatera databasen.

    Databasen är tillgänglig för alla som har behov av informationen för sin planering i olika sammanhang, från FoU till skadeutredningar och utveckling av nya produkter och konstruktioner i olika klimatzoner.

    Mer än 150 000 ton gummiasfalt har tillverkats mellan åren 2007–2013 i Sverige för asfaltering av totalt mer än 150 km vägsträckor fördelade på mer än 20 vägobjekt. I det här arbetet redovisas uppbyggnaden och tillståndsutvärderingen av fyra beläggningsytor byggda under hösten 2011 på infarten till Ragn-Sells granulat-anläggning i Vänersborg. Beläggningsytorna är utförda med olika konstruktioner och asfaltbeläggningslager. Syftet är att värdera nyttan med gummiasfalt i olika lager i vägkroppen, främst med avseende på teknisk livslängd. Provytorna har instrumenterats med töjningsgivare i underkant av beläggning. Det konstateras att vägöverbyggnader bestående av gummimodifierat bitumen kan ha betydande positiv inverkan på motstånd mot sprickor baserad på töjningsmätningarna under det första året efter byggandet av provvägen.

    Cored specimens and asphalt mass from rubber asphalt pavement laid in 2007 on the ring road in Malmö (E6) has been sent to VTI for analysis. The investigations have focused on assessing the performance characteristics: - Stability by Dynamic creep test according to FAS 468 - Flexibility by Stiffness Modulus according to FAS 454 - Abrasion Resistance by Prall test according to FAS 471 - Durability by Water Sensitivity according to FAS 446 and Winter conditioning test according to VTI methodology - Fatigue by Indirect tensile test on cylindrical specimens according to VTI methodology - Crack propagation by WTT equipment according to VTI methodology. In addition to these tests also master curves by stiffness modulus have been developed. Master curves are produced to make an overall assessment of the materials under different load and temperature conditions.

    Abstract [en]

    Extensive damage on the road E4 along the northeast coast of Sweden in the winter of 2007/2008, probably caused by the mild climate with plenty of moisture and many freeze-thaw fluctuations, brought up the issue of the need for specific requirements for the filler used in asphalt production. Aggregate from this area is sometimes very mica-rich and/or contains other "sensitive" minerals.

    The project aims to examine the methods that are relevant for the filler according to product standard EN 13043 "Aggregates for bituminous mixtures and surface treatments for roads, airfields and other trafficked areas".

    Ten different filler materials have been included in this study. Nine of these were taken from quarries along the north coast of Sweden (in some cases from inland areas), while the tenth is a reference material from a quarry in the county Östergötland. All materials are tested for a number of different properties. The test methods used are primarily from the product standard EN 13 043, while the purpose of this study is to assess the quality of filler from the point of suitability for asphalt. The materials consist of sorting 0/2, 0/4 mm and/or filler (mostly <0,063 mm) and were sieved to test fractions in the laboratory, which in most cases was 0-0,125 mm.

    Most results in this study fall into the lowest of the listed classes for each method in the product standard EN 13043. The reason is probably that the Swedish bedrock generally does not contain the kind of sensitive fine material, type swelling clay minerals, etc., which are common on the continent, and the standard is likely to be suited for.

    VTI har av Vägverket Västra regionen fått uppdraget att dokumentera och följa upp prov med olika vägöverbyggnader på E6 norr om Halmstad, delen Fastarp-Heberg. I detta notat redovisas de laboratorieanalyser som utförts på bitumen samt kompletterande analyser av permeabilitet som utförts på borrkärnor från 1996 (efter utläggning) och 2003 (efter 7 års trafik). Provvägen består av både betong- och asfaltkonstruktioner. I denna rapport redovisas resultat från bindemedelsanalyser och permeabilitetsbestämningar utförda efter utläggning (1996) och efter 7 års trafik (2003). Endast asfaltkonstruktionerna har ingått i undersökningen.

    Ringanalyser har utförts på följande bitumenanalyser under år 2003: - SS-EN

    1426, penetration; - SS-EN 1427, mjukpunkt; - SS-EN 12595, kinematisk

    viskositet; SS-EN 12596, dynamisk viskositet. Proverna, bestod av två olika

    bitumen (70/100 och 160/220) som analyserades med avseende på ovanstående

    parametrar av ca 20 laboratorier som deltog i ringanalysen. Endast några av

    dessa har dock utfört viskositetsbestämningar.

    Syftet med denna ringanalys var i första hand att laboratorierna skulle få en möjlighet att lära sig de nya Europastandarder som gäller i Sverige fr.o.m. 1 juli 2004. Följande provningsstandarder har ingått i denna ringanalys. Inom parentes anges hur många laboratorier som deltagit i respektive standard. Kornkurva, SS-EN 933-1 (36), Flisighetsindex, SS-EN 933-3 (20), LT-index, SS-EN 933-4 (16), Andel korn med krossade eller brutna ytor, SS-EN 933-5 (23), Micro-Devalvärde, SS-EN 1097-1 (14), Los Angelesvärde, SS-EN 1097-2 (15), Korndensitet, SS-EN 1097-6 (33), Vattenabsorption, SS-EN 1097-6 (24), Kulkvarnsvärde, SS-EN 1097-9 (29). De båda provmaterialen bestod av ett krossat naturgrus (Prov A) och ett bergkrossmaterial (Prov B), båda var 8/16 mm sorteringar. Provuttaget gjordes med hjälp av lastmaskin som tog ut en större mängd material från upplag och blandade om. Alla provkartongerna fylldes sedan till hälften och sedan fullt upp för att minska separation. Varje laboratorium fick 1-6 provkartonger á 10 kg av varje provmaterial beroende på hur många analyser man anmält intresse för.
