    The present report presents, partly, the collected VTI research on the "functional properties" of pedestrian and bicycle roads, and partly a survey of what has been done in this field outside of VTI. The term "functional property" has been interpreted in a broad sense, and basically everything connected with bicycle roads and bicycle traffic is included in the VTI literature review, which is the major part of the report. The operating environment analysis is made on the basis of the discussions from a seminar held at VTI, December 12, 2005, and complemented with literature reviews. The possibilities to build an instrumented vehicle for measuring bicycle roads, and the relevant properties of an evenness index, were discussed at the seminar. In the literature review, the research of VTI has been divided into five parts: traffic safety, maintenance and operation, mode choice, measurement of cycle flow, and the umbrella part "others". The research concerning traffic safety dominates, both at VTI and elsewhere. One of the conclusions from the project is that VTI should try to get funding to develop a measuring vehicle for cycleway surfaces. There is also a need to develop the unreliable methods used today (elastic tube and induction coil) to count bicycle traffic.

    Abstract [sv]

    The objective of the work presented in this report has been to develop a

    numerical method for the investigation of water-lubricated soft

    elastohydrodynamic (EHD) conjunctions as it relates to the problem of car

    tyre aquaplaning. Whereas the problem of aquaplaning on very thick water

    films is very well-studied, the aspects of a tyre sliding on thin water layer

    is much less investigated. Considering fluid flow in very thin layers, one

    can find that the relative importance of viscosity of the fluid increases

    over the mass inertia effects. Therefore it is suggested in the present

    investigation to distinct between two different regimes of aquaplaning and

    refer them as dynamic aquaplaning and viscous aquaplaning. The subject of the

    present investigation is viscous aquaplaning on thin fluid layer. Considering

    flow in a thin fluid layer allows a number assumptions to be made, which

    brings this problem close to the problem of fluid lubrication of machine

    elements. This makes it possible to apply advanced numerical methods

    originally developed for the lubrication theory to the aquaplaning of a

    pneumatic car tyre on a thin layer of water. Numerical results were produced

    for 20, 40, 60, 120, and 200 km/h. No fluid films were detected separating

    the surfaces in this range of velocities.

    Vattenplaning är ett allmänt känt begrepp och en fruktad situation för

    bilföraren. Att det finns likheter mellan smörjsituationen i ett kullager och

    vattenplaning är däremot kanske förvånande. Denna litteraturstudie lyfter

    fram några resultat och fenomen som kan förklara likheter och skillnader.

    Syftet är att belysa dels vattenplaning som ett elastohydrodynamiskt fenomen

    och dels ge tankar om hur den kunskap som finns inom smörjning av kullager,

    kuggväxlar och tätningar kanske kan användas vid studier av vattenplaning

    eller våtfriktionsproblem. Inledningsvis presenteras begreppen

    elastohydrodynamik, dynamisk och viskös vattenplaning. Därefter ges exempel

    på experimentella och teoretiska studier av vattenplaning och till sist en

    kort inblick i de beräkningsmetoder som används för kullagersmörjning.

    Möjligheter och problem med att använda beräkningsteknik från

    kullagersmörjning för att studera vattenplaning eller våtfriktion diskuteras.

    Var för sig är vattenplaning och elastohydrodynamik i maskinelement väl

    utforskade områden men kombinationen är tämligen outforskad vilket

    tillsammans med de likheter som finns talar för fortsatta studier i ämnet.

    Fyrhjulsmodeller för bestämning av vägojämnhet: dokumentation av verksamhet på VTI 2002-–20112012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    In Sweden, longitudinal roughness has been more or less synonymous with the International Roughness Index (IRI). IRI is calculated from a longitudinal profile, and describes the accumulated movement between the wheel and chassis on a quarter-car model. The result is given as this movement divided with the traveled length. In Sweden, the unit millimeters per mere is normally used. The IRI-model is only affected by movements in the vertical direction, and the speed is fixed to 80 km/h. This report presents the work to make a full-car model, with the aim to produce a more realistic view of the movements of a vehicle traveling on a normal road. The benefits with a more realistic vehicle model is that indices with a higher correlation to drivers’ and passengers’ experiences can be made. It should be mentioned that a relatively high correlation between IRI and drivers’ estimates road condition has been shown. A FullCar model should, however, give more detailed information about the effect of the road surface on the vehicle. A truck model could, for example, be used to find sections with a dangerous cross fall. A realistic vehicle model could also be used in studies concerning the deterioration of roads, as the road is partly worn by wheel abrasions and partly deformed by contact forces. A simple model could simulate hundreds of thousands of vehicle passages in only a few minutes.

    Abstract [en]

    The ”Vintermodellen” is a software tool to help form strategies for winter road maintenance.

    The present document is intended to serve as a support for future development of Vintermodellen (the Winter Model). No manual has been written before as the computer program ”vintermodellen” is exclusively used within VTI.

    The Matlab implementation of the Vintermodellen computer program was written from January 2013 to March 2014. A substantial part of the work presented in the present document was to restructure the code, and move in-data from the Matlab code to spreadsheets (Excel files).

    The presentation starts with some basics facts which are important to consider when running the ”vintermodellen” Matlab program. In chapter 6–8 the Matlab code is described in general terms. The presentation ends with the different ways to export the results.

    The Swedish Transport Administration owns the Vintermodellen and is responsible for the development. The Vintermodellen is administered by VTI by direction of the Swedish Transport Administration.

    Prognosmetoder för spårdjup och IRI: vägytedata 1997–20162019Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This report presents a proposal for a prediction method for future values of rut depth and IRI on the paved state road network and various measures of forecast exactness. The method can also be used to fill in missing values backward in time.

    An earlier VTI report within the same area concluded that a prediction method should use only data about the development locally and based its prediction on data from the current pavement cycle only. A major difference here is that the method has been expanded to include data from previous pavement cycles in the prediction method, with presentation of the advantages and disadvantages that this entails. Other parts, e.g. how data is prepared, has not been changed in any great extent.

    The results are mainly that forecasts do not generally become clearly better, nor clearly worse, by including data from previous pavement cycles. There is nevertheless an advantage in including these data because that makes prediction based on local conditions possible for more sections.

    Utformning av väg och vägyta för säkerhet, komfort och hälsa: en förstudie2006Report (Other academic)

    During summer 2002 a special directive about employees' health and security at exposure to risks due to vibrations during work, also called "Physical agents vibration directive" (Directive 2002/44/EC), was adopted by the EC. The member states had until July 6th 2005 to transfer the directive into the national legislation. Certainly the condition of parts of the road network can be such that the vibration levels that professional drivers are exposed to exceed the limits that are given in the vibration directive. VTI has therefore been commissioned to carry out a pilot study including a survey of the responsibility of the Swedish Road Administration (SRA) as well as the interpretation of the directive made by the Swedish Work Environment Authority, but also to study how different designs of the road's longitudinal profile may give rise to vibrations that are harmful or uncomfortable to humans. The present pilot study has included a literature survey concerning vibrations and their influence on humans with particular reference to roads and their design, demonstration measurements of road geometry and vibrations and analyses of these with regard to the directive as well as discussions on suitable measures for health risks or discomfort during travel on road.

    The condition of the national coated road network is measured annually in Sweden and Finland. The measuring technology has been unchanged over a long period of time, which has its benefits. As the measurements are performed using the same technology, trends and measurement series are retained without any disruption. In addition, the technology currently used is reliable and can be procured at a price level that has fallen rather than risen over the years. The principal area of use for condition measurement is to provide maintenance work with an objective basis for the planning of surfacing, but when it is found that current objective condition data can only explain between 40 and 75 percent (depending on class of traffic) of the action actually taken on the road network, consideration must be given to whether new condition data need to be added. The information that is lacking is thought to be information on surface damage and cracks. This requires new measuring technology.

    If new technology will be adopted, for the collection of condition data, the dependability of the basic measured quantities must be ensured before new options and measured quantities are examined. This study is therefore focused only on transverse-profile measurement and measures of unevenness in the transverse direction (rut depth and ridge height).

    The study has examined two of the leading new technologies that operate with scanning lasers, LCMS from Pavemetrics and PPF from Fraunhofer. The outcome of the study shows that the technology is good, and that accuracy and repeatability are comparable to the present-day point-laser systems. It is also deemed possible to retain criteria and requirements for the procurement of measurement services when the new technology is used.

    The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) annually monitors the condition of the national road network with survey vehicles. This is an operation that is, in principle, still carried out using the same technical basis as in 1986. During this time, however, measurement quantities have increased, measurement quality has improved, and measurement methods have been refined. In addition to monitoring the road network condition, the purpose of measurement surveys is to provide an information base that can be used to support investment decisions and maintenance planning. Condition measurement data can be used at an initial stage to identify potential maintenance candidates. Further investigations, carried out by project leaders, can then be used to determine which of the candidates are selected for maintenance action. The Swedish Transport Administration would ultimately like to be able to describe road conditions derived from surface measurement surveys even more accurately. This would allow project leaders to make more objective maintenance action decisions.

    With technical support from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), the Swedish Road Administration carries out the procurement of road surface measurement survey services. Road surface measurement services, for the period 2015 to 2018 (plus option year 2019), were obtained through a selective procurement process. Out of six suppliers who were invited to participate, three accepted the invitation to take part in the technical tests. The purpose of the tests is to examine the supplier’s ability to perform during simulated production conditions and be able to carry out the measurement surveys in accordance with pre-described conditions and specified limits. This report summarizes the results of the technical tests.

    Tillkomsten, och den mer eller mindre generella tillgängligheten, av höghastighetsprofilometrar har givit dramatiskt ökade möjligheter att närmare analysera ofullkomligheter hos vägprofiler och -ytor och dessas konsekvenser för trafikanten. Matematiska representationer av longitudinella vägprofiler kan sålunda användas som insignaler till matematiska fordonsmodeller avsedda för studier i tidsplanet av fordons köregenskaper, av vibrationsmiljön inuti fordonet eller för styrning av fordonssimulatorer.

    Med tillgång till den longitudinella vägprofilen kan dess amplitud/våglängdsinnehåll beräknas och representeras t.ex. i form av profilens Power Spectral Density (PSD), effektspektrum på svenska, som under antagandet av lineära egenskaper hos fordon användas som insignal vid matematiska simuleringar i frekvensplanet syftande till att t.ex. beräkna påkänningar i olika fordonskomponenter eller undersöka vibrationsmiljön inuti fordon

    Det vanligaste motivet för insamling av vägprofildata torde dock vara att skapa underlag för den analys av vägarnas jämnhet som ett rationellt vägunderhåll erfordrar. För att möjliggöra en sådan analys måste dock de enorma datamängder som den moderna insamlingstekniken medger reduceras till hanterbara dimensioner. Detta sker normalt genom fortlöpande lagring av någon form av jämnhetsmedelvärde som beräknas och över någon vald väglängd. Det jämnhetsvärde som används i Sverige är IRI (International Roughness Index). Detta mätetal ansågs vara någorlunda väl represenativt för komfortupplevelsen i en personbil men lämnar i övrigt föga utrymme för analyser av andra för trafikanten påverkande vägyteberoende effekter. Sådana analyser erfordrar en mera ingående kännedom om i profilen förekommande våglängder och tillhörande amplituder. Föreliggande rapport redovisar de alternativa sådana beskrivningar som påträffats vid en litteratursökning inom området.

    En förändrad behovsbild gör att det finns anledning att se över den information som samlas in vid tillståndsmätning av vägar. Behovet att underhålla det befintliga vägnätet ökar av flera skäl. Trafiken ökar och då särskilt andelen tunga fordon samtidigt som det byggs allt färre nya vägar. Den tillåtna fordonsvikten har ökat och kan komma att öka ytterligare, vidare kan belastningen på vägen öka till följd av ökat däcktryck. Äldre vägar är dimensionerade för andra förutsättningar och därmed uppkommer andra typer av skador på vägnätet.

    De mätmetoder och tillståndsmått som finns är inte förnyade i samma takt som ovanstående förutsättningar. Nya vägmaterial har kommit som gör vägen mer slitstark, vilket innebär att det kan vara andra egenskaper som bättre indikerar tillståndet än de gamla mätmetoderna och tillståndsmåtten.

    Enkätundersökningar bland transportanvändare har pekat på att man är mer och mer missnöjd med vägstandarden, tvärtemot vad de årliga tillståndsmätningarna visar. De övergripande tillståndsmätningar som hittills skett kanske inte längre speglar det man vill mäta? Nya eller kompletterande mått behövs.

    Rapporten beskriver förslag på mått som framkommit vid möten med Vägverkets regioner, mätleverantörer och med forskningsrepresentanter från Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut (VTI). Utifrån förslagen har ett urval av mått och mätmetoder som kan införas på relativt kort sikt gjorts.
