Traffic safety problems for pedestrians : Injuries according to police reports and health service (English)
Abstract [en]
Although the development of pedestrian safety has been positive according to accident statistics, much remains to achieve Vision Zero goal. The project's aim has been to describe the extent and nature of pedestrian safety problems. According to the national traffic accident register of the Swedish Road Administration regarding road traffic accidents reported to the police, STRADA-polis, during the period 2003-2007, 285 pedestrians were killed and 1,800 were reported to have been severely injured. Of the fatalities, on average 57 annually, over two thirds had been hit by a passenger car, and in addition it is usual to have been hit by a lorry or a bus. The road safety of pedestrians is also described via the national inpatient register of the National Board of Health and Welfare (PAR) for the period 1998-2007. People who die within 30 days have been excluded, as well as those with a treatment period < 1 day. During this period, the total number of injuries in road traffic is given as 6,433, on average just under 650 annually. The average treatment period is longest if the pedestrian had been hit by a heavy lorry or a bus. The "pedestrian-only" accidents (pedestrians in road/street environment incl. footways injured without the involvement of vehicles) account for many injuries according to the inpatient register. When those which, according to the coding, occurred in connection with sports/exercise are excluded, there remain 19,656 injuries over the period 1998-2007, on average almost 2,000 injuries annually. The annual variation has however been very large. The most common cause of "pedestrian-only" casualties was slipping/stumbling/tripping without the presence of ice/snow.
