Bilförares uppfattning om egen körförmåga
Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute.
1983 (Swedish)Report (Other academic)Alternative title
Drivers' assessment of their own driving ability (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Car drivers' subjective driving ability has been studied on samples, representative of drivers with 0, 1 and 3 year old licenses, respectively. Approximately 1 300 drivers responded to a postal questionnaire in which they assessed their driving ability by comparing themselves in various respects with drivers in general. According to the results, the subjective driving ability consists of two components, a driving skill and a defensive driving ability component. There is a sex difference in the subjective driving skill component. It is large enough to characterize men as overrating their driving skill. The overrating rapidly develops after their licensing, with the largest increase during the first driving year.

There is a correlation between subjective driving skill and self-reported driving style. The more skillful the driver rates himself, the less defensive is his driving style, i e, higher speeds and overtaking frequence. No corresponding correlation could be observed for the other subjective component - between subjective defensive driving ability and driving style.

The results are discussed in a context of available knowledge of the relationship between driving experience, driving ability, behaviour and accident risks.
