Reduction of speed limit from 110 km/h to 90 km/h : effect on travel speed (English)
Abstract [sv]

Åtgärden rönte stor uppmärksamhet i massmedia redan innan sänkningen, framför allt i lokal-TV.

Abstract [en]

In November 1998 the speed limit of 110 km/h on two lane sections of the E22 in Östergötland and Kalmar Counties was reduced to 90 km/h. This action attracted great attention in the mass media even before it came into effect, mainly in local TV. The reduction was also announced with special signs ”WARNING! Reduced speed”.

During the winter period of 1996/1997 running speeds were recorded on the road sections where the speed limit of 110 km/h was reduced to 90 km/h in the autumn of 1998.

The interesting thing about the speed recordings made in 1996/1997 was that they were made on two consecutive lane sections with different speed limits, one of which had the speed limit reduced in November 1998, thus comprising the same drivers. The measurements were carried out during daylight and were repeted in the beginning of February 1999.
